ace citizen science and the data is useful to many disciplines as well as to lichen folk

environment now and in the past is recorded by lichen, memorial stones often have dates which is ace with the not-before dating of when it started growing, so a timeline of growth etc can be established

a very odd life form, they make fungi look simple to understand in some ways

much like the churches, who may or may not have considered having evidence that some burial grounds/building walls etc are deserving of sssi status as well as protected for the obvious reasons could work for or against their interests

the plants in old ones can be interesting as well, in the steps of Keeble might be a nice set of ongoing survey data.

Interesting. I was aware of lichens and their slow growth. There are also mosses and liverworts that are worth investigation. I regret that at present these are beyond my investigations into the flora of the wood, but all of the inter-related flora can be interesting and tell a wonderful historic story.

I recently saw a post on FB, can't remember where, about people in other countries cleaning greavestones as a mark of respect. This of course will destroy any lichens and other living flora and fauna.
