Interestingly enough, there was a report this morning that in the USA Courts are to be given the power to actually write off a proportion of mortgage arrears.

You need to do what is called a SIM search (think SIM stands for Search of Index Map).
You'll need an OS plan to a suitable scale, say 1:2500, and it costs a few pounds.
