If you keep getting the odd clump remaining, you can push in a bamboo stick, let ithe bindweed climb up, then zap it very satisfyingly without spoiling surrounding plants.

I think it's to keep the worms nearer to the top where there's more food to work on. The original kit had a kind of duvet supplied but I suspect it became passé
