We did the big move nearly four years ago, all our possesions and children in a Transit luton and a Ford Escort to Mayo on the west coast of Ireland. I never really felt settled anywhere in the UK since leaving home when I was 17 but Ireland has been great and I feel at home for once. We stayed in Mayo for a couple of years and then moved to Cork, I think we will stay here for good now as we seem to be in a good place.

We came about ten years to late as the country is virtually bankrupt at the moment because the Celtic tiger has bitten everyone on the bum and the government has saddled us all with a multi billion Euro debt to bail out the Irish banks. Mass unemployment, repossesions, redundancies are the main topic of conversation at the moment.

The children go to great school with small class sizes and a respect for the teachers. I can walk five minutes down the road and fish for wild brown trout for free in a beautiful river and the pub closes when the last person leaves so it's not all bad.

I really like the idea of New Zealand but as time passes and we settle here I think that will never happen now, is the grass always greener?

Wouldn't it be fun to be properly challenged and move somewhere where two languages are spoken - e.g. N/NW Spain - Basque and Spanish, or NE Spain - Catalan and Spanish. With a view to becoming fluent in both of course
A.

Well we are in Bulgaria with Greece right in view from our windows, about 10 miles away, so that is not only two languages we could challenge ourselves with but also two different alphabets.

We were intending to make the big move when we retired, I am so glad we did this 15 years early as the language thing is harder I think as you age..... Bloody difficult as it is now!

Hello you How are you?

You need children for the lingo - quite often older small boy helps out when I'm struggling

Gawd I'm a bit out of touch with this site as I've just clicked on a strange button called 'recipe'. Do I want to put my last post in somewhere as a recipe?

Edit: bloody hell, it's over 3 years since I posted here! Been a bit busy on 's site.

I know - sorry about Ish but with DS, the blog, the gite, the garden, the ever increasing animal numbers, the boys etc etc, something had to give . I do pop into Ish from time to time though.

We are are all fine here - busy of course but enjoying life and enjoying watching the barn actually begin to look like a gite at last. My email address is rosie {at} eco-gites {dot} eu

Ah yes I guess I could have found it from your website , but I only looked at your blog a few times on the rare occasion I dropped by here, and had to find a posting by you to do so (yes I know, should have put it in my favourites... well it probably is actually there somewhere!).

Was up your way (ish) last week as we went to visit some of the D Day beaches.
