Do you have a vac sealer? They're liquid proof, at least in your context.

I wish I did, that would be very useful!

Jamanda sent me sour dough starter in a balloon. It was fine. Waterproof and expandable.

Yup, I should do. I've ordered ziplock bags so I should be able to send them out once they arrive.

Right, I now have little bags for sending kefir grains in. For those of you who would like some kefir grains to try, just PM me your address. I don't know how soon I can send them out, it depends on the weather. So hopefully by Wednesday.

They travel 'dry' well..I used to send kefir grains all over the place and I prepared them for the travel by 'drying' the worst off on kitchen towel and then sprinkling the grains with dry milk powder so that they were coated all over.
I haven't had kefir for few years now...somebody managed to spoil mine while I was in my holidays.. ..and I just couldn't get new grains with same 'personality' anymore. All the grains that other people sent me did just fizzy kefir and the grain size was small.
The 'type' that I've been after since grow into huge 'cauliflower' like growths and make only few teeny wheeny babies....and the kefir was always very mild and creamy...hardy ever any fizz.
There is so many 'strains' of grains going around the globe that hopefully one day I'll get hold of those magic 'big'ns'

I think I may have the big cauliflower grains...mine are as big as apricots...and are growing in raw goats milk. I have two at moment and when they get too big, I feed them to the dog/pigs/chickens etc...will try and add a pic when I do the milk change later.

Ooh!!! do you now?...when they do get too big...any chance of swapping a small piece for seeds or something?

I used to feed some for my chickens and dogs too..and they did have them very greedily..

Finsky; my grains don't make fizzy kefir, just nice creamy stuff. Also my grains are relatively small, but multiply fast. You're welcome to some if they are what you're looking for.

Gosh..I'm spoilt for choice now..

Thanks for the offer Anna..I've already sent my PM to 'TT'..those big and plump grains look very much like the ones I used to have.
I won't be greedy and just one type will keep me busy enough.

That's grand. I didn't realise they could vary so much, and get to that size!

I've had quite few 'personalities' on trial before..some never made big 'plobs' and some only make fizzy kefir. I had one lot that only made rice size grains..'millions' of them, and they never grew any bigger just kept dividing and dividing and they make real cork popping kefir..

Once I had grains that managed to get some Viili influence in them..another milk culture. I was warned about that it is possible to get those to merge, I kept both cultures in different end of the kitchen and both with their own jars and utensils..and still.. The resulting 'kefir' became gelly like, super stretchy stuff that you needed almost chew to get it down.. ...taste wise it was nice but the texture just stuck at back of the throat. So..again I had to get rid of everything and have a break..luckily at that time I had some 'back up' grains in freezer and was able to start again.
I've got another Viili culture coming From Finland again.. ..this time I shall keep it another part of the house!!!!
