After nearly 40 years of blissful ignorance, Lozzie, spurred on by the enthusiasm of her on-line buddies and by the relentless nagging from her 9-year-old daughter, is finally learning to knit...

I managed this much last night whilst watching the Bill. Whaddya think of it so far?

Definitely looks like some knitting to me. Well done.
What is it going to grow up to be?

If you get bored quickly, cast off and say it is a dolls scarf,if you manage a small square,it can be a pot holder,if a longer rectangle, line it and make a hanky pouch or purse and if longer than that,it can be a real scarf. You dont have to say what it is before hand

Lozzie, that looks great, and don't worry, it does get easier the more you do it.

It is currently just living by the name of "my knitting" but yes, it could indeed be a scarf for Action Man at the moment. Or a duvet for a pencil.

Hereby awarded 5 shiney gold stars and the Downsizer beginners knitting badge, Lozzie!

Now there's a thought: what about merit badges a la Brownies? Gardening ones, making and doing ones, housework, cooking, killing things...

that's your mission for next summer- teaching me to knit! If I start in July perhaps I'd manage an action man scarf for the winter!

Right - mission accepted. (You could make Mr Tigger a scarf for christmas.)

I've managed 5 scarves this winter but anything that requires a shape to it is beyond me, I can't work out what half of those abbreviations mean

Someone (I think Wellington Womble) recommended books by Erika Knight, which usually have the instructions written out in full, and even my appalling local library usually has a couple available. Really nice modern patterns too, including a few very cute toys if you are knitting for children.

I've kind of worked out most of the abbreviations but it took a while and they do almost seem to do it on purpose to lend an air of mystery to the whole thing

I don't know if it's been mentioned before on this thread but I've got, and am working through, the Stitch N Bitch book; it's for beginners. I would really recommend it. If anyone wants, I can post the beginners patterns up here, or somewhere, and also the photos of the stuff

Guilty! It is much less daunting with the vowels left in. My first grown up knitting (with shaping) is from her something knits for little cherubs book, and was a garter stitch toy rabbit, which I very nearly couldn't give away (and made with wool left over from the scarf!)
