Just checking in - are we still in a position where keeping an older diesel vehicle running is better in terms of resources than scrapping and buying new (/more efficient / hybrid tech / EV)? At some point that balance will tip.

I would imagine youâ€™re better keeping your diesel if you donâ€™t do many miles, but short runs are where diesels really pollute worst

The latest CATL claim is that they are actually producing 500wh/kg batteries in trucks. That's essentially flight grade!

battery tech has been the bottle neck since the first electric road vehicle, iirc proof of concept was established in the days of galvanic battery piles

half an hour of horse for a kilo of lump is rather good

especially as electric horses are rather better at running than icy mammoths

at 500wh/kg and without engine and gearbox, light and long range or fast for a while is very plausible

im not sure how much cargo load to battery load could be got for aviation purposes, even with 500wh/kg aircraft can be energy hungry and jet engines do energy a treat for a fairly low self mass and fuel mass overall

maybe that is not a good explanation of my reasoning

a rough estimate is a 2 seater is plausible for a few hundred miles, passenger and cargo, some way to go with battery tech, fast jet best still use fuel

light low speed, be that loiterers or obs 500wh/kg is plausible

with the tech where it is at the mo fuel is more practical for big or butch aviation
close to 2kwh/kg might work for big planes, a lot more for fast ones

I knew there was something missing from my life.

All those f*ckwits that keep going on about coal powered electricity in China, they only need so much power cos of all the absolutely pointless shit we buy from them!

I remember during Covid there was a lady in the supermarket that was having trouble getting all her packs of bottled water into the trolley. I couldn't help asking her if the taps in her house didn't work...

even the domestic filter is far better than bottled, the what apocalypse ones are ace, wine turned to water is a bit special

tap can be not to my liking, filters are queen for potable water and a bath can just "hum" for a short while

I would sooner see people use a mist fan (or the indoor equivalent, a swamp cooler) than air conditioning.....
Patio heaters are shameful. I never saw them in the US until years after I saw them in Europe - but have no idea when they first started. Even worse are the has fireplaces that are designed to put out minimal heat because they're actually just meant for ambiance and are run in all seasons

airflow, a couple of shaped fans and some dampness was rather effective when we had the hot event, far from ideal but i'm typing this and it was hot

a damp hat is quite low tech but rather useful

if you have water and a hat, heat within outside reasonable is survivable with basic principles and practice

if you have a jumper and water, chilly etc

using the problem to alleviate the problem is rather odd
if you live in a desert, learn to live sustainably in a desert etc rather than trying to out tech the environment

energy footprint per person?
water footprint..?
food..?
waste..?

umm dont move to a desert, visit maybe if there are resources, nobody needs a lawn or to wear tweed in a casino

being blessed or cursed with being awake during the telly graveyard shift i watched the roush yates crew build a 5lt, V8ohc, basic lump magnificent engineering that level of skill and care with leccy would be ideal for making EVs"sexy"on the track etc OI fossil want a race? NÃ¼rburgring rules? A well made EV would nail that race

There's a lot of black propaganda around Chinese coal. The reality is more of cleaner coal plants replacing old plants whilst renewables expand massively. Coal as a percentage is tracking downwards and I have far more belief the Chinese will address coal that I have belief in western capitalism meeting targets.

We went for an impromptu picnic at a beach yesterday and it occurred to me on route that I passed a petrol station with a queue and whilst we had enough in the tank for planned journey any inspired change of destination might have been a problem.
But hey EV drivers starting off on full are the ones with range anxiety!
On the negative side if there was EV charging in the car parks at our destination I didn't spot it.
