Quite apart from the current hoo-ha, I thought this map was interesting: density of Great Britain's poultry population based, by the look of the caption, on the recent registration drive. I daresay more detailed info is available from Defra but still interesting for a quick glance.

Blimey. You can almost smell Bernard Matthews and Sun Valley on there, can't you? (Norfolk and Hereford)

It's official, there are no chickens in Northern Ireland. I blame bird flu (and thatcher)

Interesting / worrying then that the dead swan was found in/very near to the area of highest concentration of poultry-keeping in Scotland (Fife).

If it's a high concentration they'll be indoors. IMHO intensive poultry farming is one of the lower risk areas. High possible transmission rate but very low chance of initial infection.

Careful now JB, the map Title reads GB not UK. Got to be precise with your politics and geography these days, especially with
Blairand Ahern wanting to be nice to Provo terrorists (oops, I mean
Sinn fein statesmen)

There would be quite orange shaded areas around Ballymena and Dungannon if NI was included on the map. (thats a comment on poultry density, not politics BTW

)

There are two large chicken sheds half a mile from my house, they are obviously either a figment of my imagination or Norfolk has succesfully invaded.

I think the point is it's a map of Great Britain. And Northern Ireland isn't in Great Britain.

On your travels around Herefordshire have you ever seen any chickens? Or just chicken houses.

Masses of both. Giant, industrial chicken/turkey farms, but also lots of small, domestic birds in back gardens, farm yards and roadside verges. We truly mix the 21st century and the 50's here.

im sure i heard on the news just now that there was a 1000 mile exclusion zone now in force?? was i hearing things??
